Coastal San Diego House Washing: Care Around Metal Fixtures
Plan coastal house washing around railings, lighting and metal fixtures, without confusing surface cleaning with corrosion repair.
October 30, 2026
Salt residue and corrosion are different problems
Coastal exposure can leave residue on exterior surfaces, while damaged metal finishes may show corrosion. Washing can address appropriate surface buildup, but it cannot reverse structural corrosion or restore every failed coating. Photograph rusted fasteners, railings and fixtures before the visit so cleaning expectations stay realistic.
Identify mixed materials
A single exterior may include stucco, painted trim, stainless hardware, aluminum frames and decorative metalwork. These materials do not all tolerate the same cleaning treatment. Ask how sensitive fixtures will be protected. Avoid assuming that a product appropriate for masonry should also be applied directly to every nearby metal surface.
Inspect electrical and damaged fixtures
Exterior lights, outlets and loose fittings require caution around water. Tell the crew about exposed wiring and fixtures that do not seal correctly. Electrical repairs are not a house-washing task. Damaged areas may need qualified repair before cleaning proceeds, especially where water could enter the building.
Maintain more than appearance
After washing, keep an eye on recurring deposits and deteriorating protective finishes. Use maintenance appropriate to each material and seek repair advice where corrosion is advancing. A coastal cleaning plan should complement routine property care rather than imply that periodic washing alone prevents every form of salt-related damage.
